ORIGINAL ~ Aztec Goddess Coatlicue ~ Earth Mother 2
$195.00 Sold out

This original painting was once again inspired by my recent trip to Mexico City. While I loved all of the colonial architecture and beauty of the folk art, I was strongly drawn to the indigenous arts and places. Walking along the Templo Mayor walkway invoked deep feelings of wanting to be connected while walking in a place where my ancestors likely once walked hundreds of years ago. The vendors and the jewelry and the beat of the Aztec drums affected me deeply and inspired me to come home and start reading and learning more about these beautiful civilizations that existed and thrived so long ago.
This is a depiction of the Aztec Goddess, Coatlicue. I saw her great statue in the Museum of Anthropology and was fascinated with her symbolism and the detail of her image. She is a symbol of strength and motherhood and nature and I could not help but think how Our Lady of Guadalupe is another symbol of feminine strength and motherhood. It was only natural that I was very drawn to Coatlicue. I know I will be creating many more paintings with her image.
