Painting Pulquerias is one of my favorite subjects. They are unique little cantinas with multiple doorways and usually covered in creative murals and artwork. Google some pics for Las Duelistas Pulqueria in Mexico City and you'll see what I mean.

Pulque is a drink that has been enjoyed by the people of Mexico for centuries! It is a milky, viscous liquid that is drawn from the agave cactus and then fermented. It often has fresh fruit flavors added to it for variety. Pulque is a whole and unique culture that is exclusive to Mexico. Even the glassware is unique, coming in a variety of sizes and shapes where even the glasses have names like Reina, Chivo, Catrina and Tripa! I have been enchanted with Cutura Pulquera for decades and love to paint them and create stories in my mind.

Noche de Mujeres is based on the Pulqueria that was once owned by Frida Kahlo, named La Rosita. I used the shape of that building then decided to continue with a Frida themed Pulqueria using her original artwork, Dos Nudas en el Bosque as the front mural. I imagined that if Frida were alive today and owned that Pulqueria, that it would be filled with women sharing stories, making friends, maybe finding a little romance, all the while knowing that they were in a space where it was safe to drink and let loose without fear. And that is what I created, but of course in Day of the Dead fashion because you all know I love painting my Muertitos... my little dead people,

This piece took quite a while because as usual, I'm a stickler for detail. Even the frame is embellished with wood and metal accents and hand painted, almost antique wall paper strips. Everything about this piece is meant to bring a sense of otherworldly warmth and friendship.

Painted using metallic acrylic paint on 11x14 canvas board. The frame is rustic, barnyard style wood that is painted and made into a one-of-a-kind work of art that is absolutely charming.
