ORIGINAL PAINTING ~ Nuestra Señora del Rio Grande ~ Our Lady of the Rio Grande River

This painting was an original concept for a proposed mural that would have been featured at the Albuquerque Airport.
I entered this design and it was chosen from hundreds of other entries to make it to the second round. Unfortunately, that is where it ended. Ah, well.

I had a vision to create something that would represent the spirit of our beautiful state. New Mexico is unquestionably female. Her spirit permeates everywhere. She cloaks this land of high desert with flowers and animals and natural wonders. And the heart of this state is a river that runs through and feeds the farmlands while keeping and sustaining all life. The Rio Grande at times is a meandering, sleepy brook. Sometimes she refrains from running her life blood through our bone dry arroyos and then will suddenly flow to the brink. She often takes life as her sacrifice and the tale of La Llorona is said to be rooted in her image. She is magnificent. And that is what I wanted people to see when they came through our airport.

This piece had been sitting in my studio, unfinished, for two years and I pulled her out of my old art bin, dusted her off and completed her.

This painting is created using metallic acrylic paints on 11x14 canvas board. The total framed size is: 17x20. She is framed in a "found" frame that is an actual slice of wood with a natural bark trim. The frame is hand painted too. This frame must be treated with care because the bark trim is somewhat fragile. I have sealed the frame with an acrylic sealant to help stabilize it and it should hold well, but any falls or bumps could cause damage. So please, be careful with this one.
